Creative Journaling

I enjoy unwinding with creative journaling and experimenting with my watercolour paint set.

There are moments of success, but mostly it is a meditative process.

HIKE REPORTS

I hike often.

Sometimes with a group, sometimes alone. I return to my adventures through illuminated journalling.

Hikes close to home include Kamay Botany Bay, Garawarra Farm, and Heathcote National Park.

Further afield, I often hike in the Blue Mountains National Park. My first club hike as leader was through the difficult Slot Canyon in Bungonia National Park – one of the wilder landscapes accessible from Sydney.

Along the way, I take photos of natural flora. Drawing is a challenge, and an opportunity to experiment with different media.

MONTHLY COVER PAGES

Cover pages set the tone and establish a theme for the month in my bullet journal.

This is a chance to experiment with particular design elements.

2022 has been a year of colour and collage. I use a lot of mixed media – watercolour, marker, stickers, washi tape and paper.

Sometimes I love the results. The scanner doesn’t do justice to the colours in February’s wattle wreath. I love the strength in June’s watercolour illumination. That’s -June from the Handmaid’s Tale. I imagined her making the declaration “my name is June”, salvaging her personhood. June follows May, and Mayday, the resistance organisation.

Sometimes I wish I hadn’t added a poorly-drawn mermaid (March).

SECRET WINDOW

Turn the pages to reveal layers of the scene.
